Creative Custom Built-Ins and Storage Solutions: Spring Cleaning Edition

As the seasons change, so do the rhythms of our homes. Something about fresh air and new growth outside inspires spring cleaning and decluttering indoors. We emerge from our winter hibernation and naturally take stock of what is and isn’t working in our spaces.

From deep cleaning to decluttering to remodeling, there are countless approaches to recalibrating your home. No two families or homes are alike, so why would their storage use the same cookie-cutter design? Our team creates custom built-ins and unique storage solutions for every client project.

If spring’s arrival has you evaluating and rethinking your home, we are here to help! Scroll below to read our design team’s advice on custom built-ins, storage solutions, decluttering, and getting organized.

 Our Best Decluttering Tips

  • Start small; go one cabinet, closet, or room at a time to avoid running out of steam

  • Make piles of things to keep, sell, donate, and toss

  • To reduce decision fatigue, you can also include a ‘maybe’ pile

  • Tuck away your ‘maybes’ in a storage bin: if they aren’t needed in the next 6 months, then toss

  • Be brutal when reviewing your ‘keep’ pile

  • If you haven’t used or worn something in the past year, you probably don’t need it

How to Stay Organized

  • Drop Zones are key for staying organized

  • Designate a place for mail, paperwork, keys, and chargers near your point of entry

  • Mudrooms and kitchens are ideal places for command centers with file storage, kids' cubbies, and outlets – consider it your family’s docking station

  • Feel empowered to move things around; just because something has always been stored somewhere doesn’t mean it’s the best spot for it

  • What made sense last year or 5 years ago may not be the case today

  • Taking regular stock and culling your things is great for eliminating redundancies

 Planning Custom Storage and Built-Ins

  • Take the time and approach the process with thoughtfulness

  • Consider your household and habits. For example, do you host often? Will you be aging in place? Do young kids live at home? Do you cook often?

  • Kitchens house an abundance of stuff. If we break them into zones for food, prep, cooking, cleaning, and storage, it’s easier to picture what belongs where and what custom solutions would be helpful

  • Plan solutions around your lifestyle. An avid baker, passionate coffee drinker, experimental home chef, or aspiring mixologist will all have very different kitchen needs
